Terminal City Glass Co-op (TCGC)

Terminal City Glass Co-op is the first and only non-profit, cooperative glass studio in Canada. Established in 2012, the purposes of TCGC are:

  1. To provide access to high-quality glassmaking equipment and resources to its members for their professional artistic development;
  2. To offer an educational glassmaking program for the community to encourage emerging and established artists;
  3. To promote awareness of glass as an art form; and
  4. To undertake such other activities as are necessary and desirable for these purposes.

    Our Work

    -Establishing and maintaining a specialized glass arts studio with hot shop, flame shop, cold shop and sandblaster;

    -Designing and delivering introductory publicly accessible educational programming in glassblowing, flameworking, beadmaking and sandblasting, including weekly supported ‘newbie nights’ in the hot shop and flame shop;

    -Hosting intermediate and advanced educational workshops and conferences with local and visiting glass artists;

    -Providing studio access to members of the co-op;

    -Hosting fundraising events to support the co-op;

    -Working to build and maintain a community of glass artists who support our cooperative with their membership.

    Position Summary

    Reporting to the Executive Director, the Studio Manager manages the technical aspects of the Hot shop, Flame shop, Cold shop and sandblaster; the Studio Manager maintains a clean, safe, and productive studio environment and promotes the cooperative workplace culture. The Studio Manager is also an ex officio member of the board.  The Studio Manager will work to further the Vision, Mission, Principals & Strategic Goals of the Terminal City Glass Co-Op (TCGC) and will at all times adhere to the TCGC Guiding Principles.

    - 8 hours of weekly hot shop access; full studio access to cold shop, sandblaster, and flameworking equipment

    Equipment Management

    Duty Statements

    -Maintaining the studio environment to ensure a safe environment for all.  This includes promoting the safe and proper usage of equipment by all users including Members, Students, Teachers and any other visitors to the studio.

    -Inspecting and repairing worn and damaged equipment in a timely manner so as to minimize equipment down time; this includes regular cleaning and preventative maintenance on all studio equipment, and improvements to equipment performance when possible, within budgetary limitations.

    -Identifying and implementing studio improvements in consultation with the management team and Board, following the strategic and operational plans and goals.

    -Working with the ED and the Board to identify studio improvements and prioritize capital projects for operational planning and grant planning purposes.

    Key Competencies

    -Some experience with glass furnaces, glory holes, torches, garages, sandblaster, and cold shop equipment.

    -Experience and competency with studio hand tools.

    -Some experience with welding and metalwork.

    -Ability to learn independently.

    -Ability to conduct research and learn continuously about equipment.

    Performance Standards

    -Day to day equipment management activities are expected to be carried out with minor supervision. Major capital projects are supported and supervised by the Executive Director and Board.

    -Must be capable of setting priorities and working under pressure.

    -Must be able to multi-task, maintaining equipment in multiple areas.

    -Ability to build and maintain relationships with service providers and equipment suppliers is essential.

    Supply Management

    Duty Statements

    -Monitoring studio supplies and ensuring adequate supply / restocking.  Key items including glass cullet, oxygen supplies, and sanitary products.

    -Special orders for events, visiting artists and conferences (approximately 6-7 times per year).

    -Ongoing survey of supply costs and utilities usage and tracking of this information.

    -Organization and scheduling of supply orders.

    Performance Standards

    -Ability to build and maintain relationships with service providers and equipment suppliers is essential.

    -Must schedule timely delivery of supplies as needed.

    -Working with the Bookkeeper and Accountant, track supply, equipment and utility costs and report to Executive Director, Treasurer and Financial Officer for budgeting purposes.

    Executive Support

    Duty Statements

    -Assisting with special events and coordinates materials with the Executive Director.

    -Working towards the operational and strategic goals of the organization, with the ED and the Board.

    -Training and supervising the Studio Tech(s) with the ED.

    -Sitting on the Studio Committee and receiving written reports from the Studio Committee in each meeting.

    -Weekly oral operations reporting at staff meetings, monthly written reporting at Board meetings, yearly written reporting at Annual General Meetings.

    - Procuring quotes for equipment, supplies, materials and tools as needed to support the ED with grant writing.

    -Providing input on studio equipment priorities to Executive Director and Board for annual budgeting purposes.

    -Administration skills.

    -Ability to use Microsoft Office Suite (specifically Word and Excel), PowerPoint, and willingness to learn additional software as needed.

    -Ability to work collaboratively with the Board, Studio Committee, Events Committee and Executive Director.

    Performance Standards

    -Must be able to follow up on Board and staff meeting action items in a timely manner with minimal supervision.

    -Must be able to deliver reports in a timely manner with minimal supervision.

    -Must be able to prioritize studio ‘wish lists’ and source equipment and material quotes for budgeting and grant application purposes  in a timely manner with minimal supervision.

    Education Support

    Duty Statements

    -Working with the ED to approve teachers and teaching assistants, and support progression from teaching assistant to teacher.

    -Working with the ED and the Education Committee to approve new course curriculum.

    -Working with the ED to prepare the studio for visiting instructors (approximately 4-5 times per year).

    -Coordinating the studio access and content needs of the Emily Carr University of Art and Design courses that occur each summer.

    Key Competencies

    -Must be able to assess skill level of glass artists in the hot shop, flame shop, cold shop and sandblaster for teacher and teaching assistant roles, and for suitability for teaching proposed educational curriculum.

    -Ability to work collaboratively with others.

    -Working collaboratively with the Education Committee and the Executive Director.

    -Working collaboratively with Emily Carr University of Art and Design instructor(s).

    Member Support

    Duty Statements

    -Supporting all users to ensure adherence to safety, security, and other policies, and makes recommendations regarding any areas that could be improved.

    -Encouraging the independent and courteous use of studio areas by all members, including assisting Members with regular studio clean-up.

    -Working with Studio Committee and Studio Technician to identify and rectify user issues in the studio.

    -Developing and delivering member training sessions for new equipment as needed.

    Job Factors

    Minimum Education Level Required

    Minimum Bachelors degree in glass or related arts education, or equivalent experience.

    Minimum Experience Level Required

    2-3 years of professional studio experience is preferred.

    Amount of Supervision Received

    Studio Manager reports to the Executive Director.  After initial orientation the incumbent will be given general direction by the Executive Director in weekly staff meetings and monthly Board meetings, but is expected to perform duties and responsibilities independently. 

    Skills Required

    The role requires strong analytical and problem solving skills, communication skills and an ability to learn independently. General technical skills including welding, metal work, and casting are an asset. 

    Level of Financial Responsibility and Accountability

    The Studio Manager is responsible for adhering to the annual operating budget, as well as project budgets and grant budgets. The Studio Manager is responsible for communicating with the Executive Director regarding any anticipated variance from the budget prior to authorizing any action that would deviate from the original budget.

    Impacts of Actions

    Well executed studio management results in eligibility for grant funding, positive public perception of the studio, and member retention and growth. Poorly executed studio management could result in loss of funding, negative public perception of the studio, and member turnover.

    Amount of Supervision Provided

    The Studio Manager supervises the Studio Technician(s) alongside the Executive Director

    Human Resources

    The Studio Manager will occasionally sit on the hiring panel as needed.

    Internal Contacts

    The Studio Manager has regular contact with the Executive Director, Board of Directors, Office Manager, Administrative Assistant, Bookkeeper, Studio Technician(s), Studio Committee and general members. The Studio Manager has occasional contact with the Education Committee, Accountant, contract teachers and teaching assistants.

    External Contacts

    Regular contact with equipment and supply providers. Occasional contact with Session Instructors at Emily Carr University of Art and Design.
